Frequently Asked Questions.

General

What is MedRecords.me?

MedRecords.me is a secure portal that connects you to your medical records across different doctors, hospitals, and health systems, all in one place. Instead of logging into separate portals or calling each provider, you can access your records through a single link.

Who can use MedRecords.me?

MedRecords.me is available to any individual who wants to access their personal health records. You may have been directed here by your attorney, healthcare provider, or another organization as part of a specific process. Your records are yours regardless.

Is there a cost to use this?

In most circumstances, individual users do not pay a fee. A network fee will be applied if records are returned. If no records are returned, there is no fee. Who pays those fees depends on the process or service that brought you to MedRecords.me.

The Process

What does the process involve?

After you receive your link to MedRecords.me, you will complete three steps:

  1. Authorize MedRecords.me to access your health records.

  2. Verify your identity through ID.me, a federally recognized identity platform used by the IRS and many government agencies.

  3. Choose whether to share your records with the party that referred you, or keep them for personal use only.

The whole process takes most people under 10 minutes.

Why do I have to verify my identity through ID.me?

Federal regulations require identity verification to access health records through the national health data network. ID.me is the platform that meets that standard. If you have already completed ID.me verification before, just sign in.

Why am I redirected to ID.me during the process?

The flow works in a specific sequence: you start on MedRecords.me, redirect to ID.me to verify your identity, then return to MedRecords.me to complete authorization. This handoff is required for your identity verification to carry over securely. You will return to MedRecords.me automatically after completing ID.me.

What if my name in ID.me does not match what is in my doctor’s records?

If there is a mismatch between the name in your ID.me account and the name on file with your healthcare provider, records may not be returned for that provider. Contact whoever referred you to MedRecords.me if you believe this is happening.

Your Data

What am I consenting to?

Two separate consents:

  1. Access to your own records: You are authorizing yourself to access your health data through the national health data network via MedRecords.me. This access belongs to you.

  2. Sharing with a third party: Separately, you decide whether to share those records with whoever referred you. This consent is optional and can be revoked at any time.

Note: MedRecords.me is a request-only platform. It retrieves your records from the TEFCA network and makes them available to you. Sharing with a referring party happens through the MedRecords.me platform directly, not through TEFCA itself.

Will the party I share with see future doctor visits automatically?

No. Each query is a one-time pull of your existing records, not a live feed. No one has ongoing automatic access to future medical activity through MedRecords.me.

Can I change my mind after I share?

Yes. You can log back into MedRecords.me at any time to update or revoke your sharing preferences. Revoking access stops future sharing. Records already shared before revocation remain with the recipient.

Who can see my records?

Only you, and whoever you explicitly choose to share with. MedRecords.me does not share your records with any third party without your authorization.

Network Coverage

Are all providers and health systems included?

Coverage depends on whether a provider participates in the national health data network (TEFCA). Not all providers are connected yet, particularly smaller or independent practices. Coverage is growing as federal policy continues to push participation.

If records from a specific provider do not come back, it most likely means that provider is not on the network yet, not that the records do not exist.

Can I choose which providers to include in my query?

Not currently. MedRecords.me will return records for all of your providers in the TEFCA network. Provider-level requests may become available in the future.

Access and Your Account

How do I log back in after my initial setup?

Use the original link you received when you were first directed to MedRecords.me. That link is unique to you and will take you back into your account. If you no longer have that link, reach out to the organization that referred you and they can resend it.

What if I need help?

If you were referred to MedRecords.me by an organization, contact them first. They will have the most context for your situation.
